The Q4 networking season checklist for Sri Lankan professionals

Conferences, expos and year end mixers are coming. A practical checklist to walk into Sri Lanka's busiest networking season prepared, and to turn the people you meet into real business.

October to December is the busiest connecting season in Sri Lanka. Industry conferences, trade expos, BNI socials, chamber events and year end mixers stack up week after week. The professionals who get the most out of the season are rarely the ones who attend the most events. They are the ones who arrive prepared and follow up on a system.

Here is the checklist we recommend, in the order that matters.

Why does Q4 networking matter more than the rest of the year?

Because decision makers are all in the same rooms, and budgets reset in January. A conversation in November becomes a meeting in January and a contract in March. Miss the season and you wait a year for the same density of opportunity. The catch: everyone else is meeting the same people, so being remembered is the whole game.

What should you prepare before your first event?

Three things, and none of them is a stack of paper cards.

Your introduction. One sentence about who you help and how. If you cannot say it in one breath, tighten it until you can.

Your profile. When someone looks you up that evening, what do they find? Update your details, your photo and your links before the season starts, not during it. If you carry a TapID, your card already points at that profile, so updating it once updates every card you have ever handed out.

Your capture habit. Decide in advance how you will record who you met and what you spoke about. Memory is not a system. A pocket full of paper cards is not a system either, which we covered in detail in our guide to following up after a trade show.

How do you stand out in a room full of paper cards?

Be the easiest person to save. When you tap a TapID card on someone's phone, your profile opens instantly, they save your contact in seconds and you capture theirs at the same time. No typing, no lost cards, no "I will add you later."

There is a second advantage that shows up after the event. Paper cards go into pockets and drawers. A digital profile sits in the other person's phone contacts with your face, your links and one tap to reach you.

What is the 24-7-30 follow up system?

It is a simple rhythm for turning a first meeting into a relationship, taught by BNI founder Dr. Ivan Misner:

  • Within 24 hours: send a short personal thank you while they still remember the conversation.
  • Within 7 days: add value once. Share an article they would care about, make an introduction or answer something they mentioned.
  • Within 30 days: check back in. Relationships are built on the third touch, not the first.

The hard part is not knowing the rhythm, it is running it for twenty people at once while doing your day job. That is exactly what TapID's leads inbox is for: every person you meet lands there with context, and the follow up happens from one screen.

Should teams prepare differently for the season?

Yes. If several people from your company attend events, the leads belong to the company, not to whoever's pocket the card ended up in. Put a shared capture system in place before the season, so every contact lands somewhere the whole team can act on. We wrote about this in digital business cards for teams.

The checklist, in one place

  1. Tighten your one sentence introduction.
  2. Update your profile before October.
  3. Carry a card that shares and captures in one tap.
  4. Log every conversation the same day.
  5. Thank you within 24 hours.
  6. Value within 7 days.
  7. Check in within 30 days.
  8. Review your pipeline every Friday of the season.

Walk into the season with this list and December will look very different from last year.
