QR code or NFC business card: which one should you choose?

QR codes and NFC tap cards both share your details in seconds. Here is how they differ in practice, when each one wins, and why the honest answer for most professionals is both.

Every digital business card conversation eventually arrives at the same question. Should you carry an NFC card that people tap, or a QR code that people scan? Both put your profile on a stranger's phone in seconds. Both end the paper-card cycle of printing, running out, and reprinting. But they behave differently in the field, and the difference matters more than most comparisons admit.

What is the difference between a QR code and an NFC business card?

An NFC card shares your profile when someone holds their phone near it, using the same chip technology as a payment card. A QR code shares the same profile when someone points their camera at a printed or displayed code. NFC is a physical tap on your card; QR is a visual scan of your code.

That one sentence hides a lot of practical texture, so let us unpack where each shines.

When does NFC win?

NFC wins in one-to-one moments where impressions count. You hand your card, they hold their phone to it, and the profile appears before you finish your sentence. There is no camera to open, no focusing, no squinting at a small code in bad light. In a dim restaurant or a crowded conference corridor, the tap works exactly the same as it does in a bright office.

There is also the moment itself. A metal card that shares your details with a tap says something about how you run the rest of your business. Nobody has ever been impressed by watching someone unfold a paper card list, and a QR sticker on the back of a phone does not carry the same weight in a boardroom.

When does a QR code win?

QR wins whenever you cannot be there in person, or one person needs to reach many. A code on your stage slide, your storefront window, your email signature, or your delivery van shares your profile with a hundred people at once. Nobody taps a webinar screen.

QR also has one honest advantage in reach: it needs nothing but a camera. Every smartphone sold in the last several years scans QR codes out of the box, with no app and no NFC antenna required. If your networking includes older devices or cautious phone users, the code always has a fallback role.

If you are wondering about the iPhone side of the tap question, we wrote an honest answer in Do NFC business cards work with iPhone? The short version: modern iPhones tap beautifully.

So which one should you actually choose?

For most professionals the answer is both, working from one profile. Your NFC card handles the handshake moments, and your QR code covers the distance moments, while both point at the same live profile that you update once.

This is how TapID is built. Every card we ship carries the tap and a printed QR on the card itself, and your account includes a digital QR you can drop into slides and signatures. There is no choosing wrong, because both roads lead to the same profile. You can see the finishes and formats on the devices page.

What about updating your details later?

This is where the QR-versus-NFC debate quietly dissolves, because neither one stores your details. Both are doors to a profile that lives online. Change your role, your number, or your company, and every card and code you have ever shared now shows the new version. The person who scanned you at a trade show in March sees your updated profile in September.

That is the real upgrade over paper, and it belongs to both technologies equally. If you have ten minutes, set up your profile properly and the choice of tap or scan becomes a detail, not a decision.

The bottom line

Do not pick a side. Pick a profile worth sharing, then let NFC carry it in person and QR carry it everywhere else. The professionals who network best in Sri Lanka this year are not choosing between the two; they are using each where it is strongest.
